About me
Kai is a Staff Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, working on foundation models. He specializes in advancing LLM through novel techniques in pre-training data strategy and agentic reasoning. His technical contributions have driven improvements in complex problem-solving and model knowledge, contributing to the Gemini model and the deep research product. Before joining Google, Kai worked as an Applied Scientist at Amazon Alexa AI, developing models for question answering systems. Prior to that, he worked for SAP in its deep learning team, developing computer vision models for enterprise software. He received his Ph.D. from the Max-Planck Institute for Informatics in Germany, where he worked on neural information retrieval models and evaluation. His research focuses on innovating pre-training and post-training data to improve foundational models, and proposing novel agentic designs to enhance agent capabilities. Kai has co-authored more than thirty peer-reviewed research papers. He also serves as a program committee member, editorial board member, and reviewer for academic conferences and journals.
